Looking Down

It’s been a long while since I last worked on a floor – over a decade. But the front stairs – wood exterior stairs need TLC every couple of years.

One of the steps was starting to grow some type of fungus. Really time that one was replaced.

By the time I was done, I replaced three steps.

Here’s mole getting started priming the stairs for our unit.

Meanwhile… We plan to move downstairs so that I can work on upstairs. But the bedroom downstairs had carpet: Fine as a rental, I suppose, but not nice. So we tore out the carpet. No hardwood floor under this carpet, sadly. Just many layers of vinyl composite tile.

Once I got down to the subfloor, it was better already. I decided to use a prefinished solid oak plank floor. I don’t have the equipment for the refinishing, and the prefinished is almost the same price as unfinished – the end result is also much faster.

I don’t like the look of quarter round to cover the necessary gap around floors – looks cheap and un-craftsman-ly to me. So I used a jamb saw to cut the exact thickness of the flooring from the bottom of the baseboards.

That is a little easier in theory than in practice, because sub-floors are not perfectly smooth. The jamb saw can’t sit perfectly flat on the slightly uneven floor, so the height of the cut varies slightly.

I put a border all around the perimeter of the floor, before infilling. In retrospect, I wish I’d selected out all the darkest and lightest pieces from all the boxes, and used them to make alternating light and dark boards in the border. Would have been a nice way to add a little decoration, without resorting to different wood species.

Selecting and placing boards takes quite a sense for color and shade. You don’t want to put two pieces that are overly contrasting together, but do you want to keep them sort of random. Otherwise you’ll get whole areas of the floor that are dark, and others light.

I started on the floor using an old mechanical floor nailer that my dad gave me when he helped me install the floors at the front of the house. It doesn’t require a very heavy hammer blow, but it must be perfectly aimed. Given the right technique, it works perfectly well. Needless to say, after spending a day with it, I went out and bought an air-compressor powered version. Sooo easy.

Tongue and groove flooring is almost all blind nailed (no nail holes on the surface). It fits together with tongue into groove on the sides and ends.

When doing this with a border, though, on every line of boards, you have to cut a board to fit against the border. One thing I did on this floor that we never bothered to do when I was working for my dad almost thirty (!) years ago, was to cut new grooves into all the cut ends of boards: Much too time consuming for a contractor. This floor, however, is completely interlocked at all joints, except for the one long side joint one third of the way into the floor where I’ve ripped boards to fit. I glued those in together.

To finish the job, I carefully taped all around, and caulked the gap between the floor and the baseboard. Then painted the baseboards.

Perfetto!

a new coat of paint

with new tenants moving in, the first thing on the to-do list was to paint over the PINK! and for the record, not everyone hated it. i’d say only 3 or 4 people really disliked it, and everyone else thought it was kinda great. i mean, this IS san francisco.

late on a saturday night last month, mathew, bella, arwen and i got busy masking off trim, baseboards, the window, doors, ceiling and one wall that would remain white. bella and arwen weren’t all that helpful. mostly they spent their time climbing up the ladder, standing proudly at the top, then working up the courage to climb back down.

mathew applying test swatches on four different walls. after mark, jennifer, mathew and i all decided “queen’s wreath” was the best choice, the paint spraying began.

sprayed and waiting for the paint to dry… it’s amazing how many hours prep takes and then with the sprayer, painting is done in minutes.

ta-da! queen’s wreath is a slightly purple, muted, medium blue grey. mathew was skeptical about such a dark color, but we all think it turned out great and works well with the trim and doors. yay team! (mathew did most of the work.)

while mathew was inside painting, i was just outside the bedroom painting the exterior wall and window trim. in the above photos i’m sitting on the 2nd level of the rented scaffolding.

we masked the windows and trim then mathew used the sprayer to paint the final coat. the new paint looks great! as you can see, above right, we still need to sand and paint the other walls…

but the good news is the scaffolding has finally gone back to the rental company. we’d had it for FOUR months! ack. even though it was getting expensive, it had been a busy summer, we’d had lots of friends and family visiting so we barely had time to work on anything.

now on to one of our other 200+ projects.

and my next post will have absolutely nothing to do with the house. 😉

happy holidays!

december was a busy month for us. we tried to continue working on the house, but in the end we gave in to all the holiday gatherings (one of us was more reluctant than the other…)

on a strangely warm night, after working on the house, we met our cal poly friends, alex and mae, downtown to see the holiday windows and decorations.

we caught up in union square over hot apple cider and desserts, while ice skaters happily crashed into the rink wall beside us. alex was wearing antlers!

we took the bus to alex’s house, added a couple more friends, and had a fun fondue party that went on into the early morning.

the following rainy weekend we decided to buy an electric fireplace. they’re a funny invention, basically a heater with fake flames, logs and embers that look surprisingly realistic. they must be popular this year because most stores were sold out of them. we got it for the downstairs rental unit, to give it a more homey atmosphere, but decided we might as well use it upstairs until the downstairs is ready.

while mathew cooked breakfast i decided to unpack the fireplace. it’s pretty heavy and awkward and mathew found my efforts entertaining.

i managed to drag the thing into the living room and set it up. eventually we’d like to add a gas fireplace to this room, something really modern that fits into the wall and preferably one with purple flames. but for now this will do.

while we enjoyed our new fireplace, mathew started plans for a cat tree. the one that we liked had two beds and two cradles and cost $450!

mathew used left over wood he had in the garage. he started with the round beds, the circles were made from long strips of plywood that were scored and then attached to round pieces of plywood.

next to make the cradles, he cut curved forms out of plywood, then took thin sheets of plywood, scored these, glued them together, then clamped them into shape with the forms that he already made. so cool! we bought carpet remnants from a local carpet store but i had to order sisal rope online because no one seemed to carry it in 3/8″ widths. of course the time and effort is a huge part of the cost of a cat tree but the hidden cost is the sisal rope that winds around the posts. we bought 365 feet of it!

i mentioned that we had a lot of holiday gatherings to attend, right? i think it was 6 or 7 this year. here we are in palo alto visiting with high school friends who we don’t see that often anymore because of kids and distance. this is the annual “goat” gathering, where hal (the goat) and his wife kelly fly in from colorado. mike and junko just moved back from japan, two wives are pregnant and mark’s epicenter cafe is doing well, so there was a lot to celebrate.

we had a special guest, mathew’s mom, sue and a very rare ben (“yeti”) sighting. later that evening we went to my dad’s family gathering. sadly there are no photos but we had a really fun night. (and i was given some beautiful sock yarn!)

on christmas eve we had our annual bittleston family gathering, complete with an abundance of food, drink, gifts, conversation and charles! we missed dan as he was visiting his family, but we got a surprise phone call from eva in panama! i put her on speaker phone and placed the phone in the chip bowl. we all huddled around the table to talk and it was nice to hear her sunny voice from so far away.

the next morning my immediate family joined us for lunch and then we were off to hercules for my mom’s huge extended family gathering. sorry, no photos… just imagine a fun, chaotic, all-ages group of about 50 people. my cousins and i had a white elephant gift exchange game and collected donations for a family in need. my mom made an impressive assortment of home made pies and desserts.

and then the morning after christmas we left before the sun came up to bring home our kittens! they were finally old enough to come home. at the breeder’s suggestion we took them out of their carrier and let them wander around the car. at first they were freaked out and we were freaked out. they walked around scared and crying, they seemed more scared when they looked out the windows.

eventually they calmed down and i had them sleeping on my lap by the end of the trip.

they spent some time wandering around the house then went to hide under our bed. eventually, with the help of my brother (a cat lover) we got them out and playing. mathew spent the entire afternoon finishing the cat tree and justin helped him carry it up two flights of narrow stairs. the kittens love it.

this is what we were doing before meeting our friends downtown. more insulating! glamorous, huh? this is the crawl space above the downstairs bedroom and kitchen. i cut insulation and handed it up to mathew, and for most of the day i just saw his feet sticking out of the ceiling opening.

(left) later that weekend i worked on packing up my grandmother’s old trinkets and sculptures. so many cabinets and shelves of objects that her children don’t want and i don’t know what to do with. i may venture into the world of ebay selling, but i need to work up the courage. (right) there was one morning when i had no idea where mathew was, i found him walking up from the garage carrying these curious creatures saying, “i fixed them!” 🙂 they are a fur trimmed fish and turtle on skateboards, when you pull them back they speed away. just a small example of the many things left behind by my grandmother.

and mathew just couldn’t resist refinishing this table that my grandmother left behind. the wood veneer surface had been badly water damaged. i was doubtful about refinishing thin veneer but mathew sanded, stained and polyurethaned it and now it’s so glossy it’s reflective. it makes a fancy litter box holder in my office.

sorry it’s been a while since my last post, hope you don’t mind the random assortment of news. my life feels like it is suddenly all about the kittens. in the new year i will try not to inundate you with kitten photos, but i can’t guarantee it… i hope everyone had a fun and festive holiday season.

the adventure continues…

turtle + mole + mole

it was a stressful, tiring, crazy weekend…

(left) they put in a long hard day but you wouldn’t know it from their smiles. i think because they were ready to go home! they left before it got dark and made it home in time for trick-or-treaters. (right) mathew and i worked that night. mathew is very proud of this cable/telephone junction box he created and organized in the garage.

on sunday mathew and i joined my parents for another day of moving. (left) here is a view from my grandmother’s old apartment. (right) that night we went back to work finishing projects. here is my grandmother’s bathroom with a new mirror above the sink and a medicine cabinet to the right. we worked as late was we needed to then had dinner at midnight.

popo11_10.31.09popo12_10.31.09

monday was another day of moving. my parents helped move more stuff over and professional movers brought the large furniture. it was a challenge trying to fit furniture from a 2 bedroom apartment into a 1 bedroom apartment, especially after all the boxes had been moved in! i did not take photos of any of the mess or chaos. even my office was completely filled and climbing was required to find things. (above) my auntie em, my grandmother and my mom unpacking in the kitchen. for anyone who questioned the bright pink we painted the bedroom, notice what color my grandmother is wearing…

dotd13_10.31.09dotd14_10.31.09

i was worried because my grandmother’s first night was also the night of the annual day of the dead (dia de los muertos) parade. (left) it consists of hundreds (thousands?) of people dressed as dead people holding candles, dancing, music and drumming till after 11pm. it’s a celebration of those we have lost and our street becomes completely filled with adults and children in costumes. everyone ends up in the park one block away, where there are altars and photos remembering the dead. we have a great view from our front steps. we wandered around a little bit but it was so crowded. this was the first year where we weren’t working during the parade, we enjoyed being able to sit outside on such a warm night and take it all in. (right) our neighbor created this dead light sculpture, a woman in costume poses beside it.

“Don’t just cry mournfully over the individuals, dreams and influences that have helped make you what you are. Dance for them; sing for them; honor them; leap into the air and kiss the sky for them.”

popo15_10.31.09em16_10.31.09

(left) during a really great musical portion of the parade i went inside to check on the noise level. my grandmother was talking on the phone, sharing her new phone number with relatives. she had no idea anything was happening outside. those new windows were expensive, but worth it! (right) my auntie em unpacked and organized all day and continued that night. we are so thankful that she could stay for a few days to help unpack and ease the transition for my grandmother.

family17_10.31.09

on day 2 my parents were back to move more of my grandmother’s things and my uncle gilbert stopped by for a visit. i expect to enjoy many more family visits in this new kitchen.

oh, i almost forgot to explain the title: turtle + mole + mole. my grandmother, like me, doesn’t enjoy the sun either, but she is more extreme, she likes curtains closed during the day and rarely leaves the house. but she loves visitors so let us know if you’d like to drop by, we’d love to see you!

and sometimes there’s cake…

it’s the last week before my grandmother moves in. there are lots of little finishing projects left.

paint2_10.24.09paint2a_10.24.09

we had my mom paint this cabinet pink. my dad really doesn’t like the pink but it will be a fun pop of color when you open this cabinet.

(left) i put a second coat of white paint on this living room wall. (right) mathew and my dad put up this final kitchen cabinet to the right of the refrigerator.

closet5_10.24.09closet6_10.24.09

(left) this is what FRUSTRATION looks like. i can sew a wedding dress, knit a cabled afghan, assemble a model car kit. i thought one of those closet organizer kits from home depot would be simple to assemble. the kit is perfect for an 8′ wide closet, but for this 5′ wide closet it took some design and customization. (right) i won’t even tell you how long it took me to get these 5 silly hooks onto the wall!

flowers13_10.24.09birthdays14_10.24.09

on a happier note, saturday was my mom’s birthday, and she brought ME flowers from her garden! mathew’s birthday was on monday so i had a little cupcake birthday surprise for the two of them.

cupcakes15_10.24.09cupcakes16_10.24.09

we cut each cupcake into 4 so we could all share the vegan carrot and chocolate cupcakes. my dad thought his were very romantic! so cute.

a frustrating evening. (left) i continued working on my closet. grrrr. (right) mathew having trouble and getting mad at telephone and cable tv wiring. “i don’t even watch tv!” maybe the cable wires sensed his negativity?

closet19_10.24.09janeen20_10.24.09

(left) i finally finished the closet organizers! because of the size of this closet i have left over shelves and pieces. i installed a shelf and rod in the second closet. i may install another shelf in the living room closet. (right) sunday night i painted all the picture rail in the kitchen. (sorry, it’s really hard to see in this photo…)

cabinet21_10.24.09vent22_10.24.09

on monday, mathew’s birthday, he took the day off work and did various projects around the house. i didn’t follow him around or take any photos. (left) he built this cabinet that will act as a support for the counter between the dishwasher and the refrigerator. (right) because the old vent fan label was really old and messed up mathew had me design a new one, complete with turtle + mole and symbols instead of words.

that night i made pizza for mathew’s birthday dinner and a yummy chocolate cake.

another post?! aka the final lap

okay, so this doesn’t really have much to do with the house. except to prove that we do actually get out and have some fun occasionally…

ingrid1_10.9.09ingrid2_10.9.09

last friday we went to see ingrid michaelson play at the great american music hall. (i bought tickets back when we thought we’d be done with the house by now.) ingrid’s one of my favorite artists. we even had dinner there before the show! mathew calls her “ingrid michaelperson” he wanted that to be the title of this post, but that makes no sense.

ingrid3_10.9.09ingrid4_10.9.09

(left) this is a photo of the ceiling. this is one crazy, ornate building, built in 1907. (right) the opening act was matthew perryman jones, all by himself with his guitar. we’d never heard him before but we loved him unplugged, impressive guitar skills with a voice that sounded like bono. during the break i wandered downstairs to meet him and tell him i liked his performance. he was very nice.

ingrid5_10.9.09

and then ingrid and her band played: THE MOST FUN CONCERT EVER.

ingrid6_10.9.09

lots of audience participation, stories and zany performances. mathew and i were cracking up the entire time. we can’t wait till she’s back in town. here’s a taste of what she’s like on youtube (but a little more subdued since it’s a morning radio show.)

mae1_10.10.09mathew2_10.10.09

the next morning we had brunch at jennifer and doug’s. sorry no photos! but they made us yummy breakfast burritos and smoothies and we stayed a little too long, talking and catching up. (left) that afternoon our friend mae came over to help with some paint stripping. she didn’t want her photo taken. i was going to blur out her face but it’s so small, it’s already blurry. (right) mathew buzzing away with the sander in the kitchen.

ceiling3_10.10.09ceiling4_10.10.09

that night after dinner mathew went back downstairs and tsp’d the kitchen ceiling. (left) here mathew is showing how dramatically different the ceiling looks when cleaned. (right) so shiny! doesn’t that make you want to get up on a tall ladder and bend awkwardly backwards and clean YOUR ceiling?

dad6_10.10.09mom5_10.10.09

on sunday the parentals were back to help. (left) my dad filled around the new outlets with grout he tinted with yellow paint to match the “vintage” grout. (right) my mom, big surprise, did more sanding.

mathew7_10.10.09janeen8_10.10.09

(left) mathew stained doors in the garage. (right) i sanded in the kitchen. sanding seriously goes on forever.

covers9_10.10.09covers10_10.10.09

the kitchen coming together… outlet cover plates! when we first moved in, this kitchen counter had one electrical outlet. ONE. and everything in the house was on this circuit, so if you used the toaster the lights dimmed. if you used the coffee grinder the lights dimmed. you get the idea.

sink11_10.10.09sink12_10.10.09

whenever i think i’m going to take a spontaneous photo of mathew doing something, he moves! (left) classic mathew working photo. (right) please hold still. thank you.

window13_10.10.09window14_10.10.09

that door that mae and i stripped has a big glass window that mathew wanted us to avoid with our heat guns, for fear of cracking the glass. he used chemical paint stripper on one side. not only is it a gross, smelly, toxic mess, but it doesn’t even work that well. mathew is thinking we’ll risk it and use heat guns on the other side.

door15_10.10.09door16_10.10.09

mathew took tuesday off work and worked on the house. (left) i found him in the garage polyurethaning 3 doors. i tried to get a photo of all three at once but couldn’t fit them in. (right) the bathroom door in place. it is possibly the narrowest door i’ve ever seen.

knob17_10.10.09mathew18_10.10.09

(left) really pretty ORIGINAL door knob plate that was hiding under 95 years of paint! sorry, the photo is blurry. (right) mathew filling and putting the finishing trim pieces on this kitchen window frame. looks like there was some sunlight after a crazy, rainy morning.

test run

there was a heat wave last weekend and we thought my parents deserved a weekend off. so mathew and i avoided the heat and spent saturday down in the garage stripping paint, sanding, staining and polyurethaning doors.

doordoor

(left) mathew staining the downstairs bathroom door. (right) yet another door that i paint stripped. i think this one will go on the downstairs bedroom. or is it the closet?

hingeshinges

(left) original 1914 hinges that mathew stripped and cleaned with a heat gun. it’s magical that something so pretty is hiding under all those years of white paint. (right) mathew painting the hinges and screws with black enamel. i find the process humorous. mathew uses an old 2-by-4 with lots of random leftover holes to hold the screws while he paints their heads. it’s funny because it’s a long 2-by-4 and the screws are placed randomly throughout it, individually and in clumps. maybe it’s not that funny… guess you’d have to be there, reminds me of badly planted trees.

bathroombathroom

besides my grandmother moving in, we had an even more pressing deadline: more house guests! mathew’s godfather sebastian and his wife eva were visiting from scotland and we wanted to have the downstairs bedroom and bathroom ready for them on monday. we worked late sunday night installing the toilet, sink, faucet, vanity top, lights, window privacy film, temporary medicine cabinet, sealing the shower grout, adjusting the shower door, hanging curtains, towel and t.p. bars… phew! we got it done and our guests got to do a test run for us.

all kinds of progress

momdoor2_9.19.09

(left) on saturday my mom replaced the missing carpet tack strips in the bedroom. (right) while i stripped door paint in the garage. mathew and my dad went to pick up wood trim and a new marble vanity top.

flake3_9.19.09flake

it’s funny, while working on the house, building materials often remind us of food, usually desserts, chocolate, frosting, ice cream, etc. (left) as i was stripping paint it would come off in bunched up, wrinkled piles. (right) they looked a lot like pale cadbury flake bars from england. except ours are crunchy and lead flavored!

mom5_9.19.09dad6_9.19.09

meanwhile upstairs (left) my mom sanded the wainscoting while (right) my dad cut and installed carpet padding in the bedroom.

mathew7_9.19.09carpet8_9.19.09

(left) mathew cut and installed the baseboards in and around the closets and added new door trim. it doesn’t match our original 95 year-old trim but it’s similar enough and mathew enjoyed how easy it was to cut and install. (right) on sunday morning mathew and i installed carpet in the bedroom. this carpet was previously in the living room, it was in really good condition so we held onto it and since it was larger than this bedroom we were able to reuse it. my grandmother doesn’t like carpet, she has trouble walking on it. but she’s mentioned falling out of bed once or twice and she likes to watch tv really LOUDLY so we’re hoping the carpet softens things.

carpet10_9.19.09carpet9_9.19.09

first we laid out the whole carpet and pieced together the closets. using a rented carpet stretcher and knee kicker mathew attached it to the carpet tacks around the perimeter of the room. we used a self-adhesive fiberglass tape for seams and joins, we hope it holds things together! ideally you should use heat-activated seam tape but our local store didn’t carry it.

dad11_9.19.09mom12_9.19.09

(left) my dad prepped and plastered this strip of wall near the kitchen entrance. (right) my mom continued sanding wainscotting.

dad13_9.19.09mathew14_9.19.09

kitchen

the kitchen cabinets with handles.

neighbor18_9.19.09

and the filming continues next door and in our driveway… mathew talked to our neighbor last night and found out that it’s not a rap video but a “documentary” about him. the film is being made by british film students and will be shown in november at a london film festival. (above) after it got dark they had a generator powering a bright light shining into our neighbor’s bedroom; this went on for a few hours. the light was to simulate the sun shining as our neighbor is waking up in the morning. funny documentary, filming morning at night… where the sun usually rises on the other side of the house…

a colorful weekend

last weekend was labor day weekend. and how did we celebrate? with a house full of people and plenty of labor!

mathew1_9.5.09janeen2_9.5.09

saturday morning started with quiet picture rail filling and trim masking.

mathew4_9.5.09misha3_9.5.09

(left) then the plastic door went up and mathew started painting the walls. (right) mathew’s brother misha is visiting from new york! he put his clothes on inside out and helped with painting.

pink5_9.5.09pink6_9.5.09

(left) i spent the entire day painting kitchen cabinet doors in the garage. when the sprayer noise finally stopped i ventured upstairs for a peek. i was shocked by how pink just the reflection of the wall color was. and when i walked into the room it was PINK. it’s actually darker than the photo (if you can believe it.) my grandmother loves pink. last year we painted the living room a very pale “i love you” pink. the plan was to paint her bedroom a slightly darker “valentine’s day” pink, but for some (insane) reason we decided to be bold and paint two walls “pretty pink.” my parents say that my grandmother painted a house this color years ago… we hope she likes it..!

aja25_9.5.09mishaja26_9.5.09

misha’s friend aja is also staying with us and she’s a personal chef! so, you guessed it, we’ve been eating yummy food. we appreciate her sunny presence and patience while misha helps us and we work late into the night.

dad7_9.5.09mom8_9.5.09

on sunday my parents arrived. my mom was raving about the new cabinet color and wondering if they needed sunglasses in the pink room.

(left) while laughing uncontrollably i took this photo of my mom, amazed at her dedication to the project. i certainly hope no one will ever lie down and check to see if the underside of the swivel cabinet door is painted, but if they do, they will be impressed. (right) painting the cabinet doors with a roller and latex paint (instead of oil paint and a brush) makes the project fly by! i even felt a little guilty for keeping this fun and easy project all to myself.

i hope everyone had a nice long labor day weekend!

(left) mathew sealing himself into the room with the paint sprayer. it’s a smelly noisy process but so much faster than brushes and rollers. mathew sprayed the entire room with primer and the following day he sprayed the trim with semi gloss paint. (right) after paint.

as nice as the trim looks in natural wood, it would take a lot more time to prep and polyurethane it to make it look really nice. so everything is white again, but this time it’s clean and smooth and lead-free.
